Almagest: Volume 1 - Chapter 7 Get Me Whatever the Other Humans are Having

The journey's beginning was quiet and uneventful. We spent half a day travelling at top speed through the solar system to reach our first destination. We had an escort of seven or so IPC ships and all I had to do was sit around and watch.

I was enjoying a coffee in my rather luxurious quarters when a message came over the com.

"Keejana, we're approaching the Jupiter station," Liam announced. "You might want to think about coming to the bridge some time soon."

"On my way," I hesitantly dragged myself away from doing nothing.

Before long, it was boarding day. I followed two IPC members to the ship's briefing room. The corridors were long and the lighting painfully dim. Someone had obviously made an attempt at decorating the walls to brighten the place up a little; but it looked rushed and resembled the art of a two year old.

I stifled a yawn as I struggled to keep my eyes open. I'd stayed up the entire night before, carefully getting to know every single part of this ship, as I'd rather be caught dead than spotted wandering the halls, helplessly lost. In the end, I decided that heeding Liam's advice was the best thing to do. The next transport to my family's colony didn't leave until later but it gave me ample opportunity to gather some clothes and other essentials. Before I left though, I thought it wise to go and pay my little ship a final visit.

She was still in repair when I got there. Pretty basic in structure and like many other 'Human' manufactured vessels she resembled a pile of junk shaped like an arrowhead. Along one side, the title "Sparrow" had long ago been painted in giant, silver letters, but had since faded somewhat. I waited for Liam at our usual spot in the canteen, a place that was secluded yet close to the door so I could see who was coming and going.

I picked at the tray of slop before me, replaying the conference in my mind. No matter which way I looked at it, I couldn't fight the feeling that I had just signed a deal with the devil herself.

"How'd the big conference go?" Julhian pulled up next to me, leaning an arm on my table and causing it to creak beneath his colossal weight.

"You knew about it?" I raised an eyebrow.

I knew that Liam’s stay on Earth’s moon was not really voluntary, though Morgan had tried to convince me otherwise. “Mother and son bonding time” ‘sure! I had snorted. But Liam had assured me that he was fine.

Usually I would have stayed and figured out a way to get Liam away from the lectures, but there was someone who needed rescuing, and right now I was the only hope they had.
